Abstract

Field studies were conducted to assess the effects of field ridging and flat-field planting on the growth, yield and economic return of mungbean, cowpea and soybean grown before rice in the pre-monsoon season of Northeastern Thailand. The results showed that growth and yield of the 3 legumes were not significantly affected by field ridging. However, there was higher net income in flat-field planting treatments. This was attributed to high labour cost for ridge construction. Cowpea gave the highest seed yield with both field ridging and flat field planting treatments as compared with mungbean and soybean. In economic terms, however, soybean gave the maximum net return with flat-field planting treatments.

Abstract

Poor growth and development of rice seedling were observed in the farmers’ field in Amphur Banphai, Khon Kaen province, Northeastern Thailand. Rice root samples were taken to determine the root systems in relation to plant growth. Several root galls were found in the rice roots. Then, the plant roots were stored in formaline solution for 9 months, and further investigated in the laboratory using light microscopic method. Root galls formation was caused by nematode infection. Relationship between nematode age and root age was observed. Young nematode occurred in young rice root. Nematodes fed at all point along the root but were found more often around root tips and along lateral roots. Root damage was observed in both cortex and stele caused cell enlarge and collapse of cell wall, mainly within the cortex. The study demonstrated that nematodes affected plant growth by inhibiting water and nutrients absorption. Restriction of root elongation allowed the plant susceptible to drough under erratic rainfall condition. Future research is required to determine how nematodes can be controlled.

Abstract

Field studies were conducted to assess the effects of tillage and no-tillage with and without mulch on the growth and yield of cowpea grown following rice in the post-monsson season of Northeastern Thailand. The results showed that growth and yield of cowpea were not significantly affected by tillage. There was slightly higher seed yields in tilled plots. This was attributed to tillage operation which is known to improve soil aeration. Mulch application significantly increased the leaf area per plant, total top dry weights, tap root length, root dry weight per plant and seed yield of cowpea. This was due to the better ability of mulched plots in storing soil moisture during the growing season.
